Beyond the ordinary

A Very Firm Handshake – Confessions of a Charity Chief Executive was Ted’s first published work, offering a delightfully irreverent glimpse into the often unpredictable world of running a charity. Drawing on his years in the Third Sector, Ted recounts a series of true – or at least mostly true – tales that capture the comedy, chaos, and occasional calamity of charitable life. Ever the diplomat, he refrains from naming individuals or organisations, though he mischievously suggests that those involved will have no difficulty recognising themselves – and perhaps blushing accordingly.

Written partly as a tongue-in-cheek challenge and partly to raise funds for Wetwheels Hamble, where he volunteers, Ted’s book celebrates the lighter side of doing good. It reminds readers that while charity work can be noble and exhausting in equal measure, it is never short of characters, surprises, or a very firm handshake.
